Preface
This year teams from Albania were banned and teams from Andorra compete
for the first time.
Seeding for the UEFA-Intertoto Cup
Number of teams that every country could admit to UIC was determined by
UEFA Ranking (1990/91-1994/95).
Due to fact, that Italy, Spain, England, Portugal, Scotland, Ukraine,
Albania, Luxembourg and Azerbaijan left their berths. Liechtenstein, Andorra
and Bosnia can't participate in UIC. After that, Russia didn't want its extra
fourth place - it went to Belgium, Netherlands didn't want their extra third
place - it went to Denmark (Greece also forfeited). Czech Rep. later gave its
spot to Faroe Islands.
- France, Germany and Belgium got 4 berths;
- Russia, Turkey, Austria, Yugoslavia and Denmark got 3 berths;
- Netherlands, Greece, Sweden, Switzerland, Poland, Romania, Norway, Israel
got 2 berths;
- Hungary, Croatia, Cyprus, Georgia, Iceland, Latvia, Finland, Slovakia,
Slovenia, Bulgaria, Wales, Nth. Ireland, Eire, Belarus, Malta,
Lithuania, Faroe Islands got 1 berth;
- Armenia, Macedonia, Moldova, Estonia didn't get any berth.
Basing on this ranking teams from respective countries were divided
into 5 pots. These pots looked like that (numbers of berths given in
parentheses).
- First: France (4), Germany (4), Russia (3), Belgium (1 team of 4);
- Second: Belgium (3 teams of 4), Netherlands (2), Turkey (3), Austria (3),
Yugoslavia (1 team of 3);
- Third: Yugoslavia (2 teams of 3), Greece (2), Denmark (3), Sweden (2),
Switzerland (2), Poland (1 team of 2);
- Fourth: Poland (1 team of 2), Romania (2), Norway (2), Israel (2),
Hungary (1), Croatia (1), Cyprus (1), Georgia (1), Iceland (1);
- Fifth: Latvia (1), Finland (1), Slovakia (1), Slovenia (1), Bulgaria (1),
Wales (1), Nth. Ireland (1), Eire (1), Belarus (1), Malta (1), Lithuania (1),
Faroe Islands (1).
To each of 12 groups 1 team from each pot have been drawn.
Seeding for the Champions' League
To the Champions' League UEFA allows additively top 8 runners-up by
UEFA Ranking (1992/93-1996/97) and CL defender
- Borussia Dortmund. Teams were divided into 4 pots:
- First (freed from the preliminaries, countries ranked 1-7 and defender):
Borussia Dortmund, Juventus Torino, Real Madrid, AS Monaco, Bayern Munchen,
PSV Eindhoven, FC Porto, Manchester Utd.
- Second (seeded in the qualifying round, countries ranked 8-16 and 1-8 runners-up):
AC Parma, FC Barcelona, PSG, Bayer Leverkusen, Feyenoord Rotterdam, Sporting
Lisboa, Newcastle United, Galatasaray Istanbul, Besiktas Istanbul, Olympiakos
Pireas, Salzburg, Spartak Moskva, Lierse SK, Brondby Kobenhavn, IFK Goteborg,
Rosenborg Trondheim, Sparta Praha.
- Third (seeded in the preliminary round, countries ranked 17-31):

Sparta Praha - not seeded in the qualifying round.
In the preliminary round teams from the 3rd pot were seeded and teams
from the 4th pot were unseeded. In the qualifying round teams from
2nd pot were seeded and the preliminary round winners unseeded. Winners
of the qualifying round qualify together with the teams from the 1st pot for
the Champions' League.
Seeding for the Cup Winners' Cup
Teams were divided into 3 pots
(UEFA Ranking (1992/93-1996/97)):
- First (freed, 1-17): Vicenza, Betis Sevilla, OGC Nice, VfB Stuttgart,
Roda Kerkrade, Boavista Porto, Chelsea London, Kocaelispor, AEK Athine,
Sturm Graz, Lokomotiv Moskva, Germinal Ekeren, FC Kobenhavn, AIK Stockholm,
Tromso IL, Slavia Praha, FC Luzern.
- Second (seeded, 18-32): Legia Warszawa, Kilmarnock, National Bucuresti,
NK Zagreb, Shachtar Donetsk, Apoel Nicosia, Hapoel Beer-Sheva, BVSC,
Dinamo Batumi, Slovan Bratislava, Dinaburg Daugavpils, Primorje Ajdovscina,
HJK Helsinki, Belshina Bobruysk, IBV Vestmannaeyjar.
- Third (unseeded, 33-47): Levski Sofija, Sloga Jugomagnat Skopje, Zhalgiris Vilnius,
Zimbru Kiszyniow, Glenavon Lurgan, FC Balzers, Cwmbran Town, Crvena Zvezda
Beograd, Sadam Tallinn, Hibernians Paola, Shelbourne, Ararat Erevan,
Union Luxembourg, HB Thorshavn, Kapaz Ganja.
In the first round 16 best teams freed from the preliminary round were
seeded. FC Luzern and 15 winners of the preliminary round were unseeded.
In the second round 8 best remaining teams were seeded and the rest
unseeded.
Seeding for the UEFA Cup
Number of teams is determined by
UEFA Ranking (1991/92-1995/96).
Teams ranked 1-3 have 4 teams, 4-8 have 3 teams, 9-21 have 2 teams,
rest have 1 team without Liechtenstein, three best countries in Fair Play
competition (Norway, England, Sweden) have one extra team. Extra berth was
given to Schalke 04 - UEFA Cup defender.
That gives 83 teams (80 - 1 + 3 + 1). Teams were divided into 3 pots
(UEFA Ranking (1992/93-1996/97)):
- First (26 best teams and defender): Schalke 04, Inter Milano, Lazio Roma,

In the preliminary round teams from the 3rd pot were seeded and teams
from the 4th pot were unseeded. In the qualifying round teams from
2nd pot and two best winners of the preliminary round (by ranking) were seeded
and the remaining winners unseeded.
That gives 64 teams (18 from the qualifying round, 27 teams from the 1st pot,
freed from the preliminaries, 3 teams from UEFA-Intertoto Cup, 16 losers from
Champions' League preliminary round).
In the first and second round top 16 teams from the ranking were seeded.
For that ranking each club receive sum of averages from 5 previous seasons.
Averages are ratios of: points achieved by number of matches.
Preliminary rounds are not in charge for that ranking.
